Old things that almost everyone had at home in the 60s

The 1960s were a time when many homes began to change. New materials, colors, and shapes became popular, and many households had more modern kitchens and living rooms. At the same time, many traditional things still remained in the homes.
In many Swedish homes during the 1960s, you could find objects that have almost disappeared from everyday life today. Some of these things are still used occasionally, but many have been replaced by modern technology.
Here are some examples of things that almost everyone had at home in the 60s.

A coffee pot was often on the stove in many kitchens. Coffee was brewed directly in the pot before coffee makers became common.

A hand whisk was in almost every kitchen drawer. It was used when whipping cream, eggs or batter for baking.

Enameled pots were very common. They could be red, green or blue and often had white dots or simple patterns.

A tin bread tin often stood on the kitchen counter and was used to store bread.

Glass jars for sugar, coffee and flour sometimes stood on a shelf in the kitchen. They might be marked with small labels.
Many living rooms had a radio or a large radio cabinet. The family often gathered to listen to music or the news.

A sewing machine was in many homes because many people mended and sewed clothes themselves.

The kitchen often had a meat grinder mounted on the table. It was used to grind meat for meatballs, for example.

Old porcelain coffee cups with floral patterns were common in many homes, often as part of larger dinnerware sets.

A tin cookie jar was often in the kitchen filled with cookies or biscuits.

Many homes also had a rotary telephone, often placed in the hall or on a small table.

On bookshelves you could find encyclopedias and large books that the whole family used.

Children's rooms often contained simple wooden toys, dolls or tin toys.

Although many of these things have disappeared from our homes today, they still evoke strong memories in many people. They tell the story of a time when everyday life looked a little different and when many things were used in a different way than they are today.

Old things from the 1960s have also become popular again. Retro designs and vintage items are often used to give the home a personal style.
Do you have any old things from the 60s at home? It can be fun to take them out and think about how they were once used.
